Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch

15Oct06

Synopsis:
Locke Lamora is the best con man in the city of Camorr in the Kingdom of the Seven Marrows, but when power struggles unseat the reigning underlord boss, his powers will be tested as he faces losing everything he’s worked for.

Review:
Placing a crime story within the context of a fantasy world is a fantastic idea, because it gives the story a very contemporary feel that is easily accessible. The fantasy is organically incorporated, and the world is well-rendered without overwhelming the plot. Locke Lamora is sexy and masculine in a very fresh way, and the world he inhabits is magical and menacing. This is fantasy for people who don’t like dragons.

The brief of the story caught my eye with the first few lines. Sounds very original.

  3. It’s a great book – I really enjoyed it. The crime element is something that I haven’t seen done in fantasy, and all of the fantasy elements (the world is powered by alchemy) were well integrated into the crime story.
