Cross-X by Joe Miller

Synopsis:
A year in the life of an inner city debate team. Heavily filled with the logistics of debate and the philosophy behind the arguments.

Review:
I was amazed to read about these inner-city kids, many of whom were not doing well in school, mastering the arguments of philosophers like Foucault and then using them to their advantage in debates. These are ideas that most people don’t encounter until college or even grad school, but these high school kids were swimming through them like water. I enjoyed getting a glimpse at a world that I knew nothing about, but the author was not particularly strong in character development. I wanted more anecdotes to bring these people to life, especially after the discussions of philosophy started treading water.
